Bee Nguyen

2022 Candidate for Georgia Secretary of State

Rep. Bee Nguyen Brings Strong Work Ethic to Secretary of State Campaign

Rep. Bee Nguyen (pronounced WIN) was elected to Georgia House District 89 in 2017, to fill the seat previously held by Minority Leader Stacey Abrams. She made history as the first  Vietnamese-American elected to the Georgia General Assembly. She was endorsed by Georgia WIN List for her 2017 and subsequent campaigns and we now endorse her 2022 Georgia Secretary of State campaign.

“Trump team members pushing the ‘Big Lie’ about Georgia’s voter registration rolls met their match when Rep. Bee Nguyen’s careful research allowed her to dismantle their false claims within minutes,” recalls Laura Register, Chair of the WIN List Board. “Few expected such tough questions.  But they were unaware of Bee’s thoughtful and diligent preparation for committee hearings. We are confident Rep. Nguyen will work to make Georgia a leader for voting rights, not voter suppression.”

“She inspires others with her hard work and deep commitment to everything she undertakes. She will prioritize accessibility, efficiency and equality for elections and all of the other many responsibilities assigned to the Secretary of State,” Ms. Register said.

During her legislative career, Rep. Nguyen has been a leading advocate for public education, criminal justice reform and for the protection of voting rights, especially the overturn of Georgia’s “exact match” voter registration law which had prevented many from voting, especially those from communities of color. She also worked to strengthen Georgia’s laws to protect the victims of domestic violence and hate crimes.

Rep. Nguyen grew up in Augusta as one of five daughters, born to a resourceful mother and a father who worked as an orderly at a mental institution. He made minimum wage – $3.35 an hour in 1981. At night, he studied in their basement apartment, using a cardboard box as his desk. He believed education was the only way to escape poverty.

A 2022 win would make Rep. Nguyen the first Asian American elected to a statewide political post in Georgia. When members of the AAPI community were shot during tragic shooting attacks at two metro Atlanta spas in the spring of 2021, Rep. Nguyen and her Senate colleague were interviewed by media outlets from around the world, impressing all with their great composure in the face of such a senseless tragedy.

Rep. Nguyen graduated from Lakeside High School and received an MPA in Finance and Management from Georgia State University. While in college, she founded a non-profit, Athena Warehouse, a program to educate and empower girls in under-resourced communities. This program gave her a hands-on look at the obstacles young women face and she quickly designed her program to inspire them for more successful futures. “Leadership is about bringing others with you and equipping them to lead in their own ways,” Nguyen said of the experience. “The best leaders allow others to lean into their strengths and cultivate talents while also setting boundaries. Leadership requires mutual respect and the ability to create an atmosphere which fosters growth for everybody.”

As the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, Rep. Nguyen says her family background demonstrates there is no guarantee democracy will continue indefinitely. “The writing was on the wall, all the signs were there,” Nguyen said of her parent’s generation before they eventually fled Vietnam after her father served time as a political prisoner. “They never, ever believed they would lose their country, and they did. In this moment, right now, the writing is on the wall for America. All the signs are there. We must make the protection and preservation of democracy our most pressing issue!”
