Mokah Jasmine Johnson

Georgia WIN List is proud to endorse Mokah Jasmine Johnson for House District 11 in the Athens area.

Mokah immigrated with her family from Jamaica in the early ‘80s for better opportunities and is a naturalized citizen. She has lived in Athens for seven years and she and her husband, Knowa, have a blended family of seven children and she is the “glamma” of five grandchildren.

She has 10 years of experience as an educator, including four years as an Adult GED Educator at Athens Technical College. Working with the local public school system, Mokah has led youth development workshops and “Know Your Rights” seminars. By organizing and leading discussions and forums on topics including community-policing and race relations, Mokah works to build unity and understanding.

Mokah is a passionate activist, educator, author and public speaker. A social entrepreneur, Mokah channels the connective and transformative powers of the arts to educate and empower. She and her husband founded the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) to help Athens citizens protect their civil and human rights following repeated allegations of discrimination by bars and business owners in downtown Athens. AADM is a grassroots organization which aims to combat discrimination through education and activism, and create a more inclusive environment community. AADM’s End School-to-Prison Pipeline initiative is designed to reduce juvenile incarceration and high school dropout rates. Under Mokah’s leadership, AADM has educated hundreds of her neighbors on local issues and mobilized them to advocate for policy reform. Through this group, Mokah has led successful campaigns to end cash bail locally and to update the anti-discrimination ordinance in Athens-Clarke County.

Mokah and her husband also operate a socially conscious event production and marketing company known as United Group of Artists (UGA Live). She is the founder of VIP Girls and the Hip-Hop Director for Girls Rock, two programs that build self-esteem and encourage creativity through mentorship and dance.

Mokah has served on the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections, former Mayor Nancy Denson’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Taskforce, and the Athens-Clarke County Solicitor General’s pre-arrest diversion program.

Among the key issues for her campaign:

Justice – Mokah believes Georgia law should protect its citizens, “rather than serving as a tool to disproportionately punish and incarcerate poor people and people of color.” She fully supports criminal justice reform, expanding and protecting civil and voting rights, and prioritizing gun violence prevention.

Equity – Mokah will fight to protect worker’s rights, reproductive rights, and expand healthcare, in hopes of a more economically just Georgia.

Education – As a mother with a daughter currently in Athens-Clarke County Public Schools and a former adult GED educator, Mokah is personally invested in our education system, especially public schools. She believes every family should have access to quality, affordable childcare and education.
