Women in the News: April 2, 2021
The 2021 session of the General Assembly adjourned early Thursday morning after a 14-hour day which Patricia Murphy in the AJC’s Jolt described as a scramble to “pass what they must, kill what they could and leave the rest to another day.” The State Senate adjourned just after midnight and about 20 minutes into Thursday, the House followed.

Women in the News: March 26, 2021
Reflections on Senate Bill 202, the final form for a variety of voter suppression measures which passed Thursday and was then quickly signed by Governor Brian Kemp.
At the same time, Rep. Park Cannon was arrested and charged with two felony offenses after knocking on the door of the Governor’s office as he signed the bill. She was released five hours later about 11pm.

Women in the News - March 5, 2021
Today, during our Women In the News program, we have the pleasure of presenting videos of the speeches eight of our endorsed WINning women delivered Monday when they argued against passage of the House bill. We believe you will agree these SHEROs for Democracy delivered persuasive arguments, but regrettably to an audience with its mind made up. The House bill passed along strict party lines 97 to 72.

Today’s Women in the News features a pre-recorded interview with Michael Li, senior counsel for the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law.
Li is one of the nation’s leading experts on redistricting, voting rights and elections. The New York Times calls his blog “indispensable.” All major national news outlets have featured interviews with him.

-Laura Colbert has been Executive Director of the advocacy group Georgians for a Healthy Future since 2017.
-Senator Tonya Anderson serves SD 43, which includes portions of DeKalb, Newton and Rockdale counties. She has been in the Senate since 2016.
-Representative Kim Schofield was best known for her healthcare advocacy before she was elected to represent HD 60 in 2018.
-Representative Mary Frances Williams brings three decades of advocacy to her work for HD 37, a Cobb County district she FLIPped in 2018.

Women in the News: February 12, 2021
Today’s program will feature a Session Spotlight with four fabulous WINning Women discussing a variety of issues currently under consideration at the General Assembly. Our Friday guests include:
-HD 57 Rep. Stacey Evans is an attorney and former chair of the WIN List board who was re-elected to the House in 2020 after having served in the House for seven years.
-SD 40 Sally Harrell’s 2018 victory FLIPped Dunwoody for the first time in decades and her current Senate service builds on three previous terms of House service almost two decades ago.
-HD 107 Rep. Shelly Hutchinson is a mental health professional who founded the Social Empowerment Center, a mental health and social services agency with 60 professionals serving 11 counties.
-HD 105 Donna McLeod is a chemical engineer whose 2018 victory for a Gwinnett House seat followed a 2016 loss. She became the inspiration for other “Nevertheless we persist” candidates who won in 2020.

Women in the News - January 29, 2021
This week, republicans promoted their proposed changes to election laws with language about “election integrity,” but the underlying message to voters who registered and turned out for the first time in 2020 is clear: “We don’t like how you voted and we will do everything in our power to keep you from voting again.”
We’re joined by SD 9 Senator Nikki Merritt, who FLIPped her Gwinnett seat in 2020, HD 89 Rep. Bee Nguyen, former Rep. and now Gwinnett Democratic Party Chair Brenda Lopez, the former Democratic Party Voter Protection Officer Sara Tindall Ghazal and in her first appearance before a WIN List audience, The Carter Center’s new CEO Paige Alexander.

Women in the News: January 15, 2021
In this busy news week as attention focused on impeachment and pre-inaugural headlines, it was easy to overlook the ways our WIN List endorsed women were in the news. No worries. We have you covered.
Following Thursday’s “State of the State” speech, Senate Minority Leader Senator Gloria Butler delivered the Democratic response to the governor’s budget proposals. Next week, House and Senate Appropriations Committee members will hear from state department heads about the budget proposals and have the opportunity to ask questions.
Senators Senator Jen Jordan and State Senator Elena Parent took Republican colleagues to task for their promotion of election fraud conspiracy theories and newly elected Representative Dr. Rebecca for Georgia House District 106 gave colleagues a brief tutorial on the highly transmissible new variant of the COVID virus.

Women in the News: January 8, 2021
On Monday morning, 10 new WIN List endorsed women will take oaths of office to serve in the Georgia General Assembly.
They join 10 women who FLIPped seats in 2017-18 and protected those seats against Republican efforts to reclaim them this year. Other longer-serving incumbent women fought off challengers as well and Monday we will have 45 WIN List endorsed women serving in the General Assembly.
On this week’s Women in the News, we were able to talk to seven of our newly elected women to hear about how they have prepared for their service and the issues they hope to champion.

Runoff Races to Watch: July 22, 2020

The Return of Session: July 8, 2020
This webinar discusses the budget, Hate Crimes Bill, and other events in the last two weeks of June as legislators re-convened to complete the 2020 session. A budget which greatly reduced education and public health spending passed without considering other ways to increase revenues. The Hate crimes bill passed, but other legislative measures were left on the table and some measures passed with serious legal flaws.
